At the station’s motor vehicle depot, Lake stood next to his red Harley, his arms folded across his chest. The beautiful bike, the lovely man … I had to get a handle on my emotions. Lake gave the stand a good kick and fired up the bike. I got into the rental. He followed me to the car agency and waited outside while I returned the car.

I unstrapped my helmet from the rack and strapped it on and mounted the back seat behind Lake and we were off to the motel to fetch our things.

Lake had wavered between sympathy for me in front of his peers, and disgust at me when no one was looking, but he hadn’t spoken to me nor caught my eye, and I knew why.

At the motel, I unstrapped my BUG from my ankle and threw it on the bed, turned and faced his back. “So let’s have it.”

He laid the duffel on the bed and unzipped it. “Nothing to have,” he said, not looking at me.

“Do I ride back with Grady or you?”

That did it.

He laid his shoes in the bag. “If that’s what you want, go right ahead Annie Oakley.”

I’d gone from Pollyanna to Annie Oakley in an hour. “If you’d been in the same place I was, you’d have done the same thing.”

Into the duffel went his leather shaving kit. “Where in your police training did it say it was all right to shoot people in the back.”

“There was no other option. He raised his gun. I was too far away to bring him down. If I yelled out I put people around him in danger. He was going for Rassler or Switch.”

“It wasn’t your place …”

“I should have let him shoot them?”

He turned for the dresser drawer, grabbed his socks and shorts and threw them into the duffel. “They’re scum bikers. They live to die.”

“I don’t live to let one human purposely kill another, if I can help it.”

“You’ve killed purposely.”

Once, to save his life, yes I had. “I didn’t shoot to kill and you know it. This is going no where.”

“Dru, it wasn’t our fight. Recall the off-duty ATF agent a few years back. The one who went into a convenience store in the middle of a robbery? He shot the robber, but the cops came and saw him with no uniform and a gun. They killed him. You put your life in jeopardy over two outlaws.”

“I don’t know that Rassler is an outlaw.”

“He is. You just happen to be taken with him.”

“Taken! What a jerk thing to say.”

“Okay, I’m a jerk. You like the guy. I sure as shit don’t trust him.”

“He helped us.”

“Not us. You. And that’s a maybe.”

“I believe Switch’s description.”

“I’ll look into it.”

“Whoop-de-doo.”

”Now, Rassler owes you, and so does that other douche Switch. You sure know how to make friends.”

“And maybe because of their help I’ll be able to solve your murder.”

“Cease your investigation of the Juliet Trapp.”

“Too late. I’m committed. You know I never give up.”

“Bull Dog Dru.
